The slender and graceful 15-story residential towers at the very western end of Perry street in Greenwich village represent Richard Meier's first foray into the New York City skyline. The complementary towers are an elegant and clean counterpoint to the cobblestone and brick that makes up the rest of the neighborhood. Instead of clashing, Meier's structures inhabit and enhance the street. They feel natural there. They are ultra-luxury residential, each floor is a single apartment, with around 3700 square feet per apartment in the south tower and 1800 in the north tower. Construction on the buildings has nominally been completed since late 2003, but the ground floors show no signs of the scheduled restaurants. Rumors kick around about tenants trying to unload their long-ago purchased apartments, including Nicole Kidman, the beleagured Martha Stewart, and Calvin Klein (owner of the penthouse triplex in the south tower). Tenant problems aside, the public can get a good view. Across West street, the hudson river park is finally finished, and the promenade is a great place to see these beautiful buildings. A third tower will someday join these two, footings have been dug to the south. |
